Flying Faculties

As individual studies have shown university air travel takes up a disproportionate share of the total CO2 balance of universities. The aim of the project “flying faculties” is to create transparency about air travel at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität and to include it in the already existing environmental data comparison.

By systematically recording the greenhouse gas emissions produced by air travel (for example in the context of research trips, conference visits, etc.) at the University of Freiburg, the university’s sustainability efforts are to be further pursued. Our initiative considers the preparation and publication of the data as the first important step towards the creation of transparency and a starting point for reduction measures. At the same time, collecting the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data could also be used as a starting point for the overall accounting of greenhouse gas emissions from all sectors of the university.
