Before the Pentecost Holidays, on June 6th we continued our lecture series with the exciting topic of power. We hosted Christof Timpe from the Ökoinstitut as well as Florian Diez from Fridays for Future Freiburg, who discussed together with Prof. Dr. Lena Partzsch from the University of Freiburg about power within the discourse on sustainability exemplified by the Kohlekommission (commission for coal).

Prof. Dr. Partzsch started with a theoretical input about power asymmetries and introduced different power concepts (Power over, Power to, Power with). According to her, we must ask the power question and analyze who holds which kind of power in order to understand change and stagnation in environmental politics. Mr. Timpe focused primarily on the Kohlekommission and its work in his talk. He examined its aims and weaknesses. Florian Diez complained about the weaknesses of the compromise reached by the coal commission. The results of the commission were critically examined in the subsequent Q&A with the audience. Substantial questions about the commission’s work and constitution and how the theoretical framework of power, that were introduced, applied to the situation.

We thank all for the active participation and look forward to the next lecture on Economics with Kristina Jeromin from the German Stock Exchange as well as Prof. Dr. Tilman Santarius from the TU Berlin moderated from Dr. Philippe Merz from the Thales Akademie on the 27.06..
